The short answer
Remote engine start is a BMW factory feature, offered in some markets such as North America. Many G-series BMWs sold elsewhere have the hardware it needs, and on those cars it can often be activated by coding. Whether your car qualifies depends on the model, gearbox, key and software, so it starts with a VIN check.
What it does
With the car locked, the engine is started remotely and runs for a limited time, with the climate control running, then switches off on its own. The car stays locked and can't be driven until the key is inside. It's mainly used to defrost or cool the cabin.
What decides whether your car can have it
- Gearbox: automatic transmission (Steptronic) only.
- Model and engine: most G-series models are possible; some engine and market combinations aren't.
- Key: the car's key type decides how the start is triggered.
- Software level: older I-levels may need an update first.
What activation involves
- VIN check of model, options, key and software level
- Coding of the body and engine control modules for remote start, and the vehicle order updated so a dealer update keeps it
- Test: remote start, run time and shut-off checked before the session ends
You need an ENET cable, a Windows laptop and a battery charger at the car. The session is remote; see how remote coding works.
Check local rules
Some countries, states and cities limit how long a parked car may idle. Remote start is your responsibility to use within local rules.
Frequently asked questions
Which BMWs can have remote engine start activated?
Many G-series BMWs with an automatic gearbox, such as the G20 3 Series, G30 5 Series, G05 X5 and G01 X3, depending on engine, key and software. A VIN check confirms it.
Does remote engine start work on a manual BMW?
No. It's only offered with an automatic gearbox.
Can remote start be activated remotely?
Yes. The coding is done over the internet with an ENET cable, a laptop and a battery charger connected to the car.
