How remote car coding works, and what you need at the car

Remote coding means the car stays with you while the engineer works through the dealer software over the internet. Here's exactly how a session runs and what to prepare.

By Harshit Vadgama, automotive engineer

The short answer

You connect a diagnostic interface between the car and a Windows laptop, start a remote-desktop session, and I run the official software from my side. Your car never leaves your garage or workshop.

What you need at the car

Windows laptopWindows 10 or 11, charged and plugged in
Interface for your brandVAS 6154 / J2534 (VW Group), ENET (BMW), VCI (Mercedes)
Battery chargerA proper charger, not a trickle charger
InternetStable connection, ideally cable or strong Wi-Fi
Remote accessAnyDesk or TeamViewer

Not sure what you have? Tell me the car and I'll say exactly which interface works.

How a session runs

  1. VIN check: you send the VIN and the job, and I confirm what's possible and give a fixed price.
  2. Booking: we agree a time in your time zone.
  3. Connection: charger on, interface plugged in, remote session opened.
  4. Scan and backup: a full scan and a record of the existing coding before anything changes.
  5. The job: coding, online programming, activation or adaptation.
  6. Final scan: faults cleared and everything verified, then a short written summary.

How long it takes

Simple activations often take under an hour. Online programming after a module swap, or several jobs at once, can take longer. You'll know the expected time before we start.

Is it safe?

With a charger connected and a stable connection, yes. See is remote coding safe for the risks and how they're avoided.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a mechanic?

No. If you can plug in a charger and an interface and start a laptop, I'll guide you through the rest.

Can it be done on the street?

It's better in a garage or workshop with mains power for the battery charger.

What if I don't own an interface?

Tell me the car and I'll recommend a suitable, affordable interface.
