The short answer
CarPlay can be activated on BMW and MINI cars with an NBT EVO head unit (iDrive 6, roughly 2016 to 2019) or an MGU head unit (iDrive 7, roughly 2019 onward). Older CIC and early NBT units can't run CarPlay by coding alone.
Overview by head unit
Dates overlap between models and markets, so treat them as a guide. The VIN check decides which unit and software your car has.
Why BMW CarPlay is wireless
BMW built CarPlay into NBT EVO and MGU as a wireless feature using the car's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware. That's why most activated BMWs connect without a cable, while many Volkswagen Group cars of the same age need USB.
How to check your BMW
- A split-screen display with a "Live" tile layout usually means NBT EVO
- iDrive 7 (MGU) has the newer tile-based menu with a digital cluster on most models
- Under Connected Drive or Settings you may see "Apple CarPlay" greyed out
- Or send me the VIN and I'll check the head unit and software level for you
What activation involves
The feature is enabled in the head unit, coded to the vehicle order, and the software level is checked. Some older EVO software needs an update first. You need an ENET cable, a Windows laptop and a battery charger at the car. The session takes place remotely with ISTA.
Frequently asked questions
Can a CIC or NBT unit be upgraded?
Not by coding. It needs a hardware swap to NBT EVO or MGU, which is a bigger retrofit with its own coding.
Does BMW CarPlay need a cable?
On NBT EVO and MGU it's wireless. A USB cable is only for charging.
Will Android Auto work too?
On MGU with recent software, yes. NBT EVO supports CarPlay only.
