The short answer
Most Mercedes-Benz cars with an NTG 5.5 head unit or newer (MBUX NTG 6, NTG 7) can run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Earlier NTG 5 / 5.1 units, common on early W205 C-Class and W222 S-Class, generally can't run it by coding alone.
Overview by head unit
Facelifts and regional variants change the answer, so the VIN check decides.
Signs your car is ready
- A menu entry called "Smartphone Integration" or "Apple CarPlay" that is greyed out
- A USB port marked with a white smartphone symbol in the centre console
- The model year and facelift: post-facelift cars more often have NTG 5.5 or MBUX
What activation involves
The function is coded in the head unit with XENTRY, and the car's online coding data (SCN) is kept consistent so a later dealer update doesn't undo it. A scan before and after confirms nothing else changed.
Related Mercedes jobs
CarPlay is often done in the same session as the AMG menu or a head unit anti-theft unlock.
Frequently asked questions
Is it wireless on Mercedes?
On NTG 5.5 and early MBUX it's usually wired over USB. Wireless depends on newer hardware.
Will the dealer remove it at the next service?
If the online coding data is kept consistent it shouldn't. If it ever disappears, it can be restored.
Can I add it to an NTG 5.1 car?
Usually only with a head unit upgrade, which is a larger retrofit.
